Collection: Matcha Utensils
Matcha bowls or 茶碗/chawan are most likely the oldest style of vessel tea is drunken from.
The stylistic influences on Japanese matcha bowls are various.
The first ones used in buddhist tea ceremony were luxurious Tenmoku bowls from China reflecting the taste of the court nobles and Samurai elites in the next centuries. After decades of war and the developement of the wabi aesthetic, bowls used by Korean commoners became favoured among warlords, influencing the taste of tea masters like Sen no Rikyu, Kobori Enshu and Furuta Oribe.
Today Japanese styles like Raku, Karatsu, Hagi and Shino are very popular and widely used in tea ceremonies around the world.
