STORY BEHIND THE CERAMIC

One of a kind Meiji-area Hagi Sencha-Do Set. Very refined and detailed with well developed crackle.

Hagi yaki originates from the Japanese prefecture of Yamaguchi and its origins trace back to the 16th century, when Korean potters were brought to the town of Hagi following Japanese invasion of the Korean Peninsula. Hagi teaware nowadays is mostly characterised by rough surfaces with uneven glazing, a feature bringing it very close to the principles of wabi aesthetics. Nonetheless more even and refined glazes like on this piece have a longer tradition and are appreciated for their crazing that developes over many years of use.
